The Chair

The challenge was to design a chair that achieved both comfort and stability while working with limited material using two MDF plaques and a clear structural logic. Early prototypes revealed significant issues: the chair was unstable and uncomfortable, particularly in the backrest. Rather than making small adjustments, I chose to rebuild and test multiple versions. I was especially interested in developing a low, hourglass-shaped chair and allowed the form to evolve directly through physical prototyping.

The final structure emerged gradually through cutting, adding, and modifying components, with each failed prototype informing the next iteration. This process required patience and persistence, as many versions were discarded along the way.

The plaque organization and optimization became part of the design problem itself.

Resolution

The final chair balances structural stability with improved comfort. Its form is the result of hands-on experimentation rather than a fixed initial plan.

This project taught me the importance of patience and reinforced my belief that failure and repetition are essential tools for learning and refining a design.
