Folia

I wanted to explore how physical interaction can communicate natural balance without instruction. Early forms were either too symmetrical or too unstable. By studying how drying leaves curve and fall, I developed an asymmetric volume that naturally invites rolling. Through testing, balsa wood emerged as a compromise between buoyancy and structural control.

Project

Through material testing, balsa wood was selected for its buoyancy and workability. The form was shaped using hot water and a mold, allowing controlled curvature and precision.

A central glass element contains plastic beads that create sound as the object rolls.

Resolution

Folia is a lightweight ludic object inspired by the form of a drying leaf, combining balsa wood with a central glass element. Designed to float on water, roll smoothly, and produce sound, it creates a multisensory learning experience.
